InvestingIdeas.ca aims to supply you, yes YOU, with quality investing ideas. But this can’t be done alone.
With that in mind, today I point you towards a bastion of Contrarian investing ideas. Today, I point you towards The Contra Guys. Their website goes by “Contra the Heard” (ContraTheHeard.com).
About the Site

It’s no secret that InvestingIdeas supports the contrarian, value investing style. The Contra Guys are also big proponents of that investing style. Beyond this, they are Canadian investors, meaning their investment recommendations are accessible to many Canadians .
The website itself looks like it has never been updated. It’s clunky and kind of unattractive. I think this is actually part of the aesthetic. The contra guys aren’t about appearances, they’re about value. Valuable content, Valuable stocks, Hidden Gems.
What is it Good For?

Identifying Valuable Sectors
In my experience, Contra the Heard is great for identifying sectors with high value. For instance, this fairly recent article about Banco Santander peaked my interest in investing in European banks. Unfortunately, I did not pull the trigger on that one. It would undeniably have been a good move.
For one, Banco Santander (NYSE: SAN-N) has seen its share price recover significantly since that post on January 18th of this year. Other European banks such as Lloyd’s, ING, etc. have also seen share appreciation since that date.
Experienced & Trustworthy
This subtitle sounds like a lame tagline. I admit it. But I wrote it because I truly believe that the contra guys are trustworthy and experienced.
1.) Experienced: This one is easy to prove. The website has “years in review” going back to 1997. That is 24 years. I would classify that as a very significant amount of experience. It also has returns dating back to 1992! This way you can see what you’re getting into.
2.) Trustworthy: I admit that it is hard to prove that someone is trustworthy. I suppose it is simply my gut feeling, my intuition. Also, I assume that someone who appreciates the value of virtue in investing (patience, diligence, follow-through/consistency) is also virtuous in the rest of their life. They just seem like alright guys.
Speaking of virtue & ethics, the website also contains some of their “Investing Rules” and other posts on their philosophy.
Regular Updates
Speaks for itself. The market moves, and you need to move with it. No matter how good an investing book or course is, it suffers in one important way: it is too stagnant.
Luckily, Contra the Heard provides regular updates. They even have a twitter account if you are into that. While they don’t update their site on a daily basis, I find the frequency of posting sufficient.
Benj Gallander, one of the Contra Guys, even writes a regular article for the Globe and Mail called “Contra Guys”. Let’s just hope that they don’t go too mainstream!
Until next time amigos,
Happy Investing and I wish everyone well!
